Indian television and its popularity has been the centre of attraction for not only the people of India but also throughout the world. Before cable TV became popular, doordarshan production had an eminent place in the entertainment world.Many serials and programmes aired during that time on all doordarshan channels like DD, DD bharti, old doordarshan etc. are still remembered for breaking endless records and winning many television awards.The most viewed series of 1987 doordarshan was on the epic Ramayana which proved to be a historical epic in Indian television history.

It was the first ever Ramayana series aired on television and captured every viewer’s heart. This popular serial’s name was “Ramayana” directed by Ramanand Sagar, Anand Sagar and Moti Sagar under the banner ship of the “Sagar enterprises” by Subhash Sagar, Ramanand Sagar and Prem Sagar.It was a series covering 78 epic episodes in the year 1987. It was aired in 5 continents namely North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

When the series started, it crossed and broke all barriers of cast, creed, religion or colour and everyone irrespective of their religion followed the series regularly and loved the charismatic effect of it.

The name of characters were of course Sita, Ram, Lakshman, Bharat, Shagrughna, Ravan, Hanuman, Dashrath, Kaushalya, Sumitra, Kaikayee, Manthara, Indrajit, Janak, Vasishta, Sumanta, Mandodari, Sugriva, Mandavi, Urmila, Shiva, Shuddhkirti, Kumbhakarna, Vibhishana, Vishwamitra and Parwati each played by the television actors namely Arun Govil, Deepika Chikhalia, Sunil Lahiri, Sanjay Jog, Sameer Rajda, Arvind Trivedi, Dara Singh, Bal Dhuri, Jayshree Gadkar, Rajni Bala, Padma Khanna, Lalita Pavar, Vijay Arora, Mukraj Rajda, Sudhir Dalwi, Chandrashekhar, Aparajita, Shyansundar Kaalani, Sulakshna Khatri, Anjali Vyaas, Vijay Kavish, Poonam Shetty, Nalin Dawe, Mukesh Rawal, Shrikant Soni and Bandini Mishra respectively. They found their place in Indian television through Ramayana.The love for the series was so much that it also has some funny yet heart touching Incidents under its name-

40000 people waited to have a glimpse of the lead actors Ram and Sita outside Birla Mansir in Jaipur. It is believed that during a marriage ceremony at Chandigarh, the bride did not arrive on time at the mandap because she was found watching the serial and refuse to do anything else during that telecast hour. The guests had no option but to wait.The CM of Uttar Pradesh refused to attend any calls during its telecast time.If by chance electricity went off, people attacked the power station in Kashmir.In a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, some ministers came late and they said they were watching Ramayana.

The monkeys on trees outside a mental asylum in Ranchi started to behave just like Hanuman in the serial when they watched it on the screen. They showed an act of humility by organising a Samadhi for a dead monkey.A funeral was delayed so that the mourners could first finish watching Ramayana and then concentrate fully on the funeral.

Doctors and nurses refused to see patients during that hour. Many patients complained that they were abandoned by doctors.Many churches set a different time for Sunday masses so that all the members of the church and the people coming for masses can watch the serial first and then come.

Roads were found empty as all rickshaw walas and auto walas were found busy on television during that hour. Several people lodged complain against them as well.The women got emotionally attached with the serial.

They would specially wait for its telecast and considered watching to be a means of communication with God. This mythological series describes the life of Ram who was the seventh incarnation of Vishnu.

It magically brings out how Ram was born after Devtas prayed to Lord Vishnu for a son to be born to King Dashrath. It beautifully shows how Sita garlands Ram in her Swayamwar. The moment is mesmerising for the viewers.

The journey of Ram for fourteen years of exile is showcased beautifully after Kaikayee is provoked by Manthara asking for two promises from King Dashrath. The entire period is narrated with full enthusiasm and nostalgia.

This series won various awards for its excellent screenplay, direction, cinematography, music and other different creative verticals. Some of them include Braj Shree puraskar, Kala shree award, Best TV serial, Udyog Jyoti puraskar, The Millennium award and many more. It was a cult show, which was aired on Doordarshan and it affected the day to day lives of the people as well.

Every single role was awarded and critically acclaimed. People could see the essence of reality on television in the form of Ramayana. People started to consider the TV actors as their heroes and role models. Every role was so perfectly used that no role was less than the other.

The actors actually lost their real identity and were best known by the name of the characters they played in the serial. Till present, everyone remembers Sita and Ram by the name of the actors Arun Govil and Deepika Chikharia respectively. Art, direction, dialogues, screen display everything was spot on.

No wonder the serial won numerous awards. No serial till now has matched it in terms of popularity and no serial could break the number of records this serial made during its telecast. It was named as the most viewed mythological TV show by the Limca book of world records. Till today, the first name that comes to mind while talking about the television mythological is this epic “Ramayana”.

Ramanand Sagar could never be forgotten for his contribution to the Indian television in the form of Ramayana and so is reflected from the number of awards and respectable titles he was showered with for Ramayana.

  3. Ramayana by Dr Ramanand Sagar was fabulous & still it is.The glimpse of this marvallaous TV serial still like fresh blossoms.
    The reason is only one that the aim of serial is to know about our golden past & life of Lord Rama & to to make money.These days producers & directors only want commercial cinema.
